Journal prompts from echoprism — colour

Colour: Prompts for Remembering

Colour attaches itself to memory in a way that's hard to explain and easy to feel — a shade of green that's suddenly a specific kitchen, a red that's suddenly a specific year. These prompts use colour as a way in, not a subject in itself. Pick one, or follow the pull of whichever colour is on your mind today.

A Colour From Childhood

Name a colour you associate with being young — a bedroom wall, a piece of clothing, a toy. Write what it's attached to, in as much detail as you can recover.

Is that colour something you still choose now, or something you've quietly avoided since? Either answer is worth following.

The Colour of a Person

Pick someone who mattered to you and assign them a colour, without overthinking it. Write about why that colour and not another — what it is about them that the colour seems to hold.

A Colour You Don't Trust

Everyone has a colour that puts them slightly on edge, for reasons that don't always make sense. Name yours, and write about the earliest moment you can trace that reaction back to.

The Room You're In

Look around wherever you're sitting right now and pick the colour your eye lands on first. Write for a few minutes starting from that colour alone — where it takes you is the point.

A Year in One Shade

If the last twelve months had to be one colour, what would it be? Write about why, and whether that colour feels finished or still ongoing.
